The Baby Grew Up

Read Matthew 1:18-25

She will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. —Matthew 1:21

In a thought-provoking essay, Halford E. Luccock wrote about how we can miss the point of the Christmas story. He said: “We can become so charmed with the story of a baby that we grow sentimental about it.

Finding Jesus

Read Romans 8:27-39

Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? —Romans 8:32

After someone stole a valuable ceramic figurine of Baby Jesus from a nativity scene in Wellington, Florida, officials took action to keep thieves from succeeding again. An Associated Press report described how they placed a GPS tracking device inside the replacement figurine. When Baby Jesus disappeared again the next Christmas, sheriff’s deputies were led by the signal to the thief’s apartment.

Christmas Sacrifice

READ Galatians 4:1-7

God sent [his Son] to buy freedom for us . . . so that he could adopt us as his very own children. —Galatians 4:5

O Henry’s classic tale “The Gift of the Magi” tells of Jim and Della, a young married couple who are struggling financially. As Christmas approaches they want to give special gifts to each other, but their lack of money drives them to drastic measures. Jim’s prized possession is a gold watch, while Della’s is her long, beautiful hair. Ironically, Jim sells his watch in order to buy combs for Della’s hair, while Della sells her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch.

Born In Us

READ Micah 5:1-5

Bethlehem Ephrathah . . . a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf. —Micah 5:2

During a visit to England’s picturesque Stratford-upon-Avon, I was struck by how a town’s identity and future can be affected just because someone was born there. Every year, half a million people come to visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare, whom some consider the most influential playwright in the English language.

The Gift Of Love

READ Ephesians 1:1-14 and 3:11

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son. —John 3:16

Nathan, age 8, was working hard (with a little help from his grandfather) to build a birdhouse for his mother for Christmas. He referred to it as his “secret project.” He gave it careful thought and poured all his energy into it. Most important, he was motivated by love.

Canceled Christmas

READ Luke 2:33-38

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. —Luke 2:33

We felt as if our Christmas was being canceled last year. Actually, our flight to see family in Missouri was canceled due to snow. It’s been our tradition for quite a few years to celebrate Christmas with them, so we were greatly disappointed when we only got as far as Minnesota and had to return home to Michigan.
